Ekadashi Guide · Sacred Fasting & Spiritual Observance
Ekadashi (एकादशी) — the eleventh lunar day — is one of the most sacred observances in Sanātana Dharma. Occurring twice each lunar month, it is dedicated to Lord Viṣṇu and offers immense spiritual merit. Learn the significance, types of fasting, and proper observance rules.
The Sacred Eleventh Day
The word "Ekadashi" comes from Sanskrit eka (one) + daśa (ten) = eleventh. It refers to the 11th day of both the waxing (Śukla Pakṣa) and waning (Kṛṣṇa Pakṣa) phases of the Moon. There are typically 24 Ekadashis in a year (sometimes 26 in an adhika māsa).
According to the Purāṇas, Ekadashi originated as a goddess born from Lord Viṣṇu's cosmic energy to destroy the demon Mura. Pleased, Viṣṇu declared that those who observe Ekadashi vrata will be freed from sins and attain Vaikuṇṭha.

The Origin Story · Ekadashi Devī
From the Padma Purāṇa: A fearsome demon named Mura terrorized the devas. Lord Viṣṇu fought him for a thousand years and, exhausted, retreated to a cave to rest. From Viṣṇu's cosmic energy emerged a beautiful goddess who destroyed Mura. Pleased, Viṣṇu named her Ekadashi and granted the boon that anyone who fasts on this day will be freed from all sins and ultimately attain His abode.
"Those who observe the vow of Ekadashi, which is dear to Me, are certainly the best among men. I award them liberation." — Lord Viṣṇu

Common Questions
Can pregnant women or sick people fast?
Yes, but modified. They may observe a partial fast (fruits/milk) or simply avoid grains. Health takes precedence. The mental/spiritual aspect is most important.
What if I accidentally eat grains?
If unintentional, continue your fast with devotion. The intent (saṅkalpa) matters most. You may also observe a fast on the next Ekadashi with extra sincerity.
Can I brush teeth or take medicines?
Yes. Hygiene and health are important. Use toothpaste without swallowing. Essential medicines must be taken (with water if necessary).
What if I miss the exact Parāṇa time?
Break the fast as soon as possible after Dvādaśī sunrise, even if the ideal window passed. Offer prayers and continue your day. Observing the next Ekadashi with extra care is recommended.
