🙋 Understanding Panchanga

Panchanga (पञ्चाङ्ग) is the traditional Hindu calendar system built on five elements: Tithi (lunar day), Vara (weekday), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (luni-solar combination), and Karana (half-tithi). Together, they provide precise cosmic timing for daily activities, festivals, and sacred observances.

A Tithi is the angular difference between the Sun and Moon. Every 12° of separation creates one Tithi, yielding 30 Tithis per lunar month — 15 in the waxing Shukla Paksha and 15 in the waning Krishna Paksha. The calculation uses precise astronomical positions, not approximations.

A Nakshatra is one of 27 lunar mansions, each spanning 13°20' of the zodiac. The Moon transits one Nakshatra each day, and each carries unique energetic qualities. Knowing your daily Nakshatra helps align activities with natural cosmic rhythms — for example, Rohini favors creative pursuits, while Ashwini supports new beginnings.

Hindu festivals follow luni-solar rules. Most are tied to specific Tithis within particular lunar months. For example, Diwali falls on Kartika Amavasya, and Holi on Phalguna Purnima. This calendar uses the Lahiri Ayanamsa (the official standard in India) for precise sidereal positioning.
