Planet Interpretations · Graha Influences
In Vedic astrology (Jyotish), the nine celestial influencers — the Navagrahas — shape our karma, personality, and destiny. Learn what each graha represents in simple, clear language.
What is a Graha?
The Sanskrit word "Graha" means "to seize" or "to influence." Unlike Western astronomy's "planets," grahas include the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and the shadow planets Rahu & Ketu. Each graha carries a specific energy — some beneficial (benefic), some challenging (malefic) — and their placement in your birth chart reveals your strengths, struggles, and life path.
The Nine Celestial Influencers
Surya · Sun
Benefic (mildly malefic if afflicted)Soul · Authority · Vitality. Surya represents the self, father, government, and leadership. A strong Sun gives confidence, clarity, and a sense of purpose. Weak Sun may cause low self‑esteem or issues with authority.
Chandra · Moon
Benefic (waning Moon can be malefic)Mind · Emotions · Mother. Chandra governs feelings, intuition, and mental peace. A well‑placed Moon gives emotional intelligence and nurturing nature. Afflicted Moon brings mood swings or anxiety.
Mangala · Mars
Malefic (can be functional benefic)Energy · Courage · Aggression. Mars drives ambition, physical strength, and competitiveness. It also rules siblings and property. When strong, it bestows leadership; when harsh, anger and conflict arise.
Budha · Mercury
Neutral (adaptable)Intellect · Communication · Wit. Budha represents logic, learning, business, and speech. It is quick and changeable. A strong Mercury makes one clever and articulate; weak Mercury may cause indecision or nervousness.
Guru / Brihaspati · Jupiter
Most BeneficWisdom · Fortune · Spirituality. Jupiter is the great benefic, bringing expansion, knowledge, children, and wealth. It protects and guides. A strong Jupiter indicates optimism, good luck, and a generous heart.
Shukra · Venus
BeneficLove · Beauty · Luxury. Shukra governs relationships, art, comforts, and material pleasures. It represents the feminine principle and creativity. A strong Venus blesses with charm, artistic talent, and harmonious partnerships.
Shani · Saturn
Malefic (teaches through hardship)Discipline · Karma · Longevity. Shani is the taskmaster, bringing delays and lessons. It rewards hard work and patience. A well‑placed Saturn gives endurance, wisdom, and structure; afflicted Saturn may bring sorrow or obstacles.
Rahu · North Node
Shadow planet · worldly desiresObsession · Illusion · Innovation. Rahu amplifies whatever it touches — it represents foreign lands, technology, and unconventional paths. It creates intense cravings and sudden events. Rahu pushes us out of comfort zones.
Ketu · South Node
Moksha karaka · detachmentSpirituality · Past life · Letting go. Ketu is the tail of the celestial serpent; it signifies isolation, intuition, and liberation. It can bring sudden losses but also profound wisdom. Ketu teaches non‑attachment.
