Understanding the Cosmos

Cosmic Insights

What is a Tithi?

A Tithi is a lunar day — the time it takes for the Moon to move 12° ahead of the Sun. There are 30 Tithis in a lunar month, each carrying its own cosmic energy signature.

Hindu Lunar Months

The Hindu calendar follows 12 lunar months from Chaitra to Phalguna. Adhika Masa (intercalary month) occurs approximately every 3 years to align lunar and solar calendars.

Nakshatra Astronomy

The 27 Nakshatras are lunar mansions — 13°20' segments of the ecliptic. The Moon transits one Nakshatra each day, coloring the emotional atmosphere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our calculations use the Surya Siddhanta astronomical model with Lahiri Ayanamsa — the same system used by most traditional Hindu Panchanga makers. The engine computes planetary longitudes, lunar conjunctions, and Tithi boundaries with sub-degree precision. Results are verified against published Panchanga data for accuracy.
Adhika Masa (intercalary month) occurs when the Sun does not transit into a new zodiac sign during an entire lunar month. This happens approximately every 32-33 months. During Adhika Masa, the same Tithi can occur twice — once in the Adhika month and once in the regular (Nija) month. Our finder shows the first chronological occurrence per year.
Generally, Shukla Paksha (waxing moon) Tithis are considered more auspicious than Krishna Paksha. Ekadashi (11th Tithi) is spiritually significant for fasting. Purnima (Full Moon) and Amavasya (New Moon) are powerful for spiritual practices. Tritiya (3rd), Panchami (5th), Saptami (7th), Dashami (10th), and Trayodashi (13th) in Shukla Paksha are considered favorable for new ventures.
Yes! The finder identifies major Hindu festivals and Vrats associated with specific Tithis. When a festival is detected, it appears in the summary card and results table. This helps you plan for Diwali, Holi, Navratri, Ekadashi fasting days, and many other observances years in advance.
