📖 Understanding the Calendar

Expand to learn about the astronomical basis of these calculations.

A tithi is a lunar day in the Vedic calendar, representing the angular relationship between the Sun and Moon. Each tithi is approximately 12° of separation. There are 30 tithis in a lunar month — 15 in the bright half (Shukla Paksha) and 15 in the dark half (Krishna Paksha). The tithi at sunrise traditionally determines the day's quality for spiritual and worldly activities.

A nakshatra is one of 27 lunar mansions in Vedic astrology, each spanning 13°20' of the zodiac. The Moon transits through one nakshatra approximately every 24 hours. Each nakshatra carries unique energetic qualities that influence emotions, decisions, and auspicious timing.

Our calculations use established astronomical formulas for the Sun and Moon positions, including the Lahiri Ayanamsa correction. Precision is typically within ±1° for lunar longitude — sufficient for accurate tithi and nakshatra determination. The ephemeris model uses standard orbital mechanics recognized by the astronomical community.

Yes. Because tithi is determined by the Sun-Moon angle relative to your local timezone, your geographic location and timezone offset affect which tithi is active at a given moment. Always set your correct coordinates and timezone for the most accurate results.
